Coilovers for Every Budget: BC Racing vs Fortune Auto vs HKS vs Öhlins

Let's have a serious conversation about coilovers. They're usually the first real suspension upgrade on a build, and the gap between a budget set and an elite one is big. Here's what you're actually buying, what you can tune, and the club's list of favorites rated from budget to elite. Pro tip for DIYers at the end.

What a coilover is

The name is short for "coil over shock absorber": a damper with a coil spring around it, built as one unit. On a performance car the point is control. Coilovers can lower the car's centre of gravity and raise roll stiffness, which cuts the weight transfer when the car changes direction.

What you can adjust

Most aftermarket coilovers give you some or all of three adjustments:

  • Ride height. Threaded spring seats or threaded bottom brackets raise or lower the car.
  • Preload. How much the spring is compressed before it's loaded. With a progressive spring, more preload means a stiffer spring.
  • Damping. If the dampers are adjustable, you can stiffen or soften compression and rebound.

The damper design matters too. A larger monotube damper can move more fluid and respond to small bumps more sensitively; a twin-tube design allows more suspension stroke, which helps ride quality.

The club's picks, budget to elite

Budget: BC Racing

Budget Boost: BC Racing Coilovers deliver top performance without breaking the bank.

BC Racing coilovers use proven, cost-effective engineering to deliver adjustable damping and reliable performance for daily driving and light track use. Ideal for enthusiasts starting their upgrade journey.

Mid range: Fortune Auto

Value Vibes: Fortune Auto offers the perfect balance of cost and performance.

Fortune Auto coilovers balance advanced damping calibration with consistent ride comfort and handling. Their design is optimized for varied driving conditions, making them a practical mid-range upgrade.

Premium performance: HKS

Precision Performance: HKS Coilovers bring track-ready refinement for the serious enthusiast.

HKS coilovers are engineered for track-ready precision with finely tuned rebound and compression settings. Their performance is proven in motorsport environments, offering enhanced responsiveness and stability for high-performance driving.

Elite engineering: Öhlins

Elite Engineering: Öhlins represents the pinnacle of suspension tech for those who demand the best.

Öhlins coilovers set the standard in suspension with cutting-edge damping technology and exceptional build quality. Designed for extreme conditions, they deliver superior ride quality and precision handling that meets professional-grade demands.

Which one is for you?

Start from how you drive, not the badge. A daily with the odd track day is exactly what the budget and mid-range options are built for; the premium and elite tiers earn their price on a car that sees real track time, where the finer rebound and compression adjustment pays off.

Pro tip for DIYers

Lube up the threads on a fresh install! Proper lubrication with anti-seize is vital during installation. Threaded collars that live behind the wheels see water and road salt, and threads that seize are a nightmare the first time you want to change the ride height.

Once the car is back on the ground at a new height, get the alignment checked: changing ride height changes the geometry.

Getting them fitted

FAPAUTO is the official sponsor of the Redlined Car Club, and an official retailer and installer of all four brands.

While the car's up on the lift, it's a good time for the brakes. Here's why the club powder coats calipers.
