Powder-Coated Wheels: Why the Club Swears by It (and What FAPAUTO Has Been Coating)

A fresh set of wheels in a new color changes a build more than almost any other single mod. Do it with a rattle can and it chips by the end of the season. Do it with powder and it lasts. Here's why the club keeps pointing people at powder coating, how our sponsor FAPAUTO handles the job, and some of what has come out of their booth.

Why powder, not paint

The club put it simply when it showed FAPAUTO's coater at work:

Powder coating is the ultimate choice for a flawless finish! Unlike traditional painting, powder coating offers superior durability, resistance to chipping, fading, and scratching. To become a pro in powder coating, you need a keen eye for detail, precision, and the right equipment to master the art of creating stunning, long-lasting finishes.

The reason is in how it's applied. Powder coating is a dry, free-flowing powder, sprayed on electrostatically so it clings to the part, then cured with heat in an oven. With no solvent in it, it builds up thicker than paint without running or sagging, and the cured finish is generally tougher than conventional paint. That's also why it's a proper job rather than a quick spray: the wheel has to come off the car and out of the tire, be stripped to bare, clean metal, coated, and baked.

On a busy day it's a production line. As the same post put it: "I've seen him powder coat 5 sets of wheels in a day and more at night."

Your car still rolls while the wheels are out

Coating means the car is on the ground without its wheels for a while, which is awkward at a busy shop. FAPAUTO's answer is a set of carriage wheels:

Notice the carriage wheels on the Supra? We use those to make the cars mobile at the shop anytime that the customer wants to leave their car with us while we powder coat the wheels.

Thanks to @junjun_871 for the red beast in that clip.

Powder, paint, dip or wrap?

There's more than one way to change a wheel's color. Here's how they compare:

  • Powder coating is the most durable of the four. It's baked on, resists chips and brake dust, and lasts years, but the wheel has to come off the car and out of the tire, and it costs more up front.
  • Professional wet paint can match any color and finish and looks excellent, but it's softer than powder and chips more easily on a wheel that sees curbs and road grit.
  • Peelable coatings ("dip") are cheap and reversible, which makes them good for trying a color. They don't last on a daily driver's wheels, and they tear at the edges.
  • Vinyl wrap is rarely practical on wheels: too many compound curves, and heat from the brakes works against the adhesive.

If the color is a long-term choice and the car is driven, powder is usually the one that's still looking good two winters later.

What to ask your coater

A wheel isn't a fence post, and a good shop treats it differently. Ask:

  • How do you strip it? Old paint or coating should come off completely, usually chemically or by media blasting, so the new finish bonds to bare metal.
  • Do you pre-bake cast wheels? Cast aluminum holds trapped gas that can bubble through a fresh coat in the oven. Many coaters bake the wheel once to drive it out first.
  • What gets masked? The hub mounting face, the lug seats and the bead seats are commonly kept clear of thick coating, so the wheel sits true and the tire seals.
  • Can you fix the curb rash first? Coating over damage just makes shinier damage. Repairs come before color.

Looking after the finish

Powder is tough, but harsh cleaners still dull it. Use a pH-neutral wheel cleaner, a soft brush and plenty of water, and skip acid-based "wheel brighteners" made for bare metal. Clean the wheels when they're cool, not straight after a drive when the brakes are hot. A coat of sealant or ceramic coating makes brake dust much easier to rinse off.

Calipers too

It isn't only wheels. This set of Brembo calipers for a BMW went from worn to yellow:

Frequently asked questions

Is powder coating better than painting wheels?

For wheels on a car that gets driven, usually yes. Powder coating is baked on and resists chips, brake dust and fading better than wet paint, though paint can match more colors and finishes.

How long does powder coating on wheels last?

A properly prepared and cured powder coat typically lasts years on a daily driver, far longer than peelable coatings or rattle-can paint.

Do the tires have to come off to powder coat wheels?

Yes. The wheel has to be bare to be stripped, coated and baked in an oven, so the tires are dismounted and mounted again afterwards.

Can you powder coat brake calipers too?

Yes. Calipers are stripped, coated and baked the same way, then rebuilt. The club has a full post on powder coating calipers.
